The first-timer’s guide to Fiji’s islands

Mamanucas or Yasawas? Resort or island-hop? We break down where to go, how to get there and what it really costs.

Some places are best understood slowly, and Fiji is one of them. Give it a few unhurried days and it opens up: the early-morning light, the places only locals seem to know about, the meal you'll still be talking about on the flight home.

This guide covers what to see, when to go and how to make the most of your time, whether it's your first visit or your fifth.

When to go

May to October is dry season, with warm days and calm seas. Shoulder season is often the sweet spot, with fewer people, softer light and better value on stays.

Book a day sail from Port Denarau early in your stay. You'll want to go back.

Local tip

Getting around

Distances can be deceptive. Build in more time than you think you'll need, travel light and keep your plans loose enough to say yes when something unexpected comes up.

Bali beyond the beach clubs

Trade a day by the pool for sunrise rice terraces, water temples and a waterfall you'll have almost to yourself.
